Seconds on Sunday

I mentioned a few posts ago about the great wildflowers we saw on our vacation.

One the road to the Weatherill Mesa, our second day at Mesa Verde, we saw a stand of wild iris. As one might imagine, I get all a-shiver to see free range iris...as it were. Didn't get a photo, though. We were on our way to the Ranger led tour, and didn't want to tarry.

Then, on our way 'home', back to the room, on the road we had traveled at least four, five, maybe six times, I saw a ditch full of the same! And I focused...I saw more...and more, and more! There were fields of them! It was crazy, I tell you. The numbers, and the fact that I hadn't noticed them until then!

Yep. Nary a photo....

But I offer these instead.
With my own interpretation of what they are...
a penstemon...with an ancenstral puebloan wall backdrop
a stunning display of globe mallow at Far View Site...
mules-ears...I think...or wyethia...
an orange penstemon that I thought was scarlet gilia all week...with yucca...

prickly pear!
sego lily!

I only know Sego Lily as a clue in the crosswords! Now I know what they look like!

Great Wildflower shots. Mesa Verde is one of my favorite places, but we haven't been there in years since the kids grew up. I wish it was just down the block. Thanks for the photos and the memories invoked.

Such pretty flowers! That's great that you take time to photograph all of the flowers and post them on your blog! You are a good photographer (of course)!

I think they are also called (or I know them as ) Mariposa lilies. They have a very short flowering period, but I love them.

Are you sure it's not scarlet gilia? If not, it's certainly related. Depending on the altitude it could be hillside gilia ...

Welcome home! It's a lovely area around Mesa Verde. My husband was born in Durango. Thanks for the Colorado wildflower fix!

  • Welcome...

...to my humble effort. Thanks for taking the time to stop by, and I hope you find something mildly interesting, slightly amusing, barely creative, or at the very least, not too terribly trite.
