Ham and Beans

Just put ham and bean on to slow cook in the oven.  If I didn't have to work, I could do so much with my time and energy.  Retirement...I await you with bated breath.

As if I something else on which to spend my time, the offspring turned me on to Pinterest over the holidays.  While I think it is an interesting site on which to save ideas for future reference, I find the dichotomy of dessert recipes, and the commitment to healthier lifestyles and exercise programs very concerning.  What are these young women wanting?  Organized lives, with soft sugar cookies, and skinny jeans...I think, anyway!

My boards?  A camera poster, a knitting comic strip, and a wooden spool wreath...and candles made with Epsom salts.  Yep, an old lady's pinterest.  (I am beckyperryirons, by the by..)

In other news, I have spent approximately six weeks now learning my new smarty pants phone. I upgraded to a Droid shortly before Thanksgiving...or maybe shortly after.  Who knows...Christmas has happened since, but I digress.  I am loving being able to play Scrabble at work!  You know...on my lunch hour!  I have found that Amazon offers a free app/day.  Lately they have mostly been games, but I have scored a couple of good other types, like a doc app, and an organizer one.  Good news is that it hasn't beaten me.  Downside is I have had to learn something new...again...and there is still more to master and keep track of and integrate.

Life is tough in the modern world.

One more day off, before the work a day world returns.

Technology Is My Friend?

On my last trip out of town, much to the amusement of the Offspring, my really cool phone was…er….given a drink of water.

This trip, there was going to be no carrying of the phone in pockets. The new camera was going to be carefully tended to. Smarts we have, and these smarts we were going to use.

There was fun with the Eldest Daughter ‘hacking’ the blog password. Not really so tough. See, I am not terrible creative with the password I use for the things that ‘really don’t matter’.

Seriously. I trust the Offspring. And we all had a good laugh.

And that afternoon, upon my return to the room from swimming with Grandbebe Girl, Youngest Daughter says, “I was just going to text Eldest to get your computer password so I can check my email…”

Haha, isn’t that funny! Texting the east coast from Utah, when I am 3 floors down...but no need now, see, because I was there, and I proceed to…not be able to get into my computer.

Computer says my password is wrong. Check caps lock. Try again. What the…

I don’t get it. Try try again. And again. And against all logic, continue to try the same thing over and over and over. (Because sometimes it does work with computers…unlike in real life…)

But, alas, to no avail. Something...corruptive...has happened and I am unable to get into my computer. I use the other computers available and do some searching for some solutions and am frustrated by what I find to be the solutions. Doable, but frustrating.

Going to have to wait until I get home. Probably going to have to do a recovery. Probably not a terribly big deal, but still….why is it always something…

Stupid password…stupid computers…stupid technology…that I love...

Seriously. In the hotel room? 3 laptops, 4 cell phones, and 5 cameras. Five cameras? Yes, five…3 point and shoots, and 2 dSLRS…mine and the even more brand frikkin’ new one the Sister’s Mister gave to her at lunch the day she came to see us…the 'big sister' of mine! (…I still cannot even believe that!)

Anyway. Upon my arrival home, I begin to tell Wonderful Guy the Sad Story, and he says, ‘well, start it up.’ So I did. And he sits down and starts to log on.

And as he does so, I remember…

My real computer password.

Not the one I tried forty seven times in a row convinced without a doubt that it was it.

Not the password I use for ‘most things that don’t really matter’.

That I tried to use over and over and over again.

Yes. I am that girl.

Then Wonderful Guy turns to me and says, ‘Anything else need fixin’?’

Maybe my head...

The Flushed Phone

..lives again!

I have been using one of our old phones. And it worked perfectly fine.

And I knew how to use it. Which was a way big plus.

But it was hard to text on this ‘old fashioned’ phone. Isn’t that funny? Old-fashioned cell phone! (…why, back in the day, I remember when there were party lines, and different homes had different rings…and there were rotary dials…and manual typewriters were for ‘texting’…)

Wonderful Guy and I went phone shopping. Seems there is a ‘lost and stolen plan’ where one gets a discount, albeit a lesser one than the ‘new every two’ plan. So we went to see what there was to be had in a comparable style to what I really liked and enjoyed and had fun with, but unfortunately, appeared to have killed.

None of them were as nifty neat-o as the one I water-boarded.

Except the Blackberry Storm…oooh….now that is like chocolate chocolate chip ice cream….yummy and sweet!

Also. Very expensive. And I have been jonesing for a dSLR camera since the first of the year. I don’t want to have to spend some of THAT money on a new phone that I shouldn’t have to need.

So I went home and tried up my dead phone once more. And I thought to plug it into the charger, and lo! The display lights up.

Says ‘Battery charging’! Well. Saints alive!

15 seconds later? ‘Battery charged’ That can’t be right.

I unplug it and the display goes blank. And I am downcast again.

But then, I think…I should try to turn it on while it is plugged in! And , behold! it fires up, just like a normal, dry phone ought to! I can’t call, because service has been switched, but I take a photo, and it works…as long as it is plugged in.

Not plugged in, dead as a door nail.

Wonderful Guy tests the battery with a zapper charger battery checker thing he has in a magic bag of tricks he keeps in the garage, and it appears…appears….the battery is fried.

A new one was ordered for far less than…say, a Blackberry Storm….and winged its way to me even as I anxiously awaited all week.

It arrived today, and I could tell immediately there was life to be had! After a brief charging, a nice chat with the Verizon guy (I looked looked over my shoulder and didn't see the crowd that is in all the commercials...I was reduced to phoning!), I called/txted all the kids that were witnessing to the flushing fiasco.

Momma's a happy camper, and the wallet no less flatter for it!

DOA

My little HP Pavilion has croaked.

It is a premature demise, happening only a blasted 18 months after purchase!!! Even the Geek Squad guy was surprised. Why, they usually last 2-3 years!

That made me feel better...

So I am shopping (which is fun) for a new computer (which is not). Since the motherboard is more expensive to replace than the computer is worth.

Why!?! Why me!?! I liked my little guy...it worked just great for me. Why did he want to leave me???

Sensing all was not quite right, having had some warning signs that something might be amiss, I backed up yesterday to our external hard drive....a week early.

Sometimes my instincts are good.

And sometimes I even follow them.

Oops....

...I was fiddling with a new template...

...and some things went away....

....and I don't have time to find them right now....

...so don't think it's you who is missing stuff....

Good thing I was going to start over with the book list next year. Sure wish I would have got a count, though.

Dearest Sister, you can quit laughing now...
