That Time of Year Again

The iris...they are a-bloomin'!

Los Coyotes

Celebration Song

Bewilderbeest

Liger

Pinkness

An unknown two-toned...

and one of the new ones I planted last year...the list and names of which I have misplaced and forgot.  My mother is spinning in her...urn, I know.  But I can still appreciate why I chose it!  I think it's lovely.

More are opening up daily! It's an exciting time for me.

And yet, as I walk around the yard, clicking my photos, I am noticing it is going to be a big year for splitting the rhizomes.

(All photos will biggity on clickity.)

TGIF

I woke early early early Thursday morning, stretched, rolled over, and before going back to sleep, thought, I am soooo glad it's Friday.

Only it wasn't.  It was Thursday.  It's was a very long week, work-wise.  Very busy. Very wearing and tiring. I am really too old for that much effort.  (Unless it's effort that I choose to put forth.  Like for my new crafty, creative studio space....I liked putting forth that effort....)

And on the home front, there have been a few details with the 'new room' that have occupied me and a meeting of which I was 'in charge'. I don't like being in charge so much. (Unless it is being in charge of something I like...like picking where we might go for ice cream.  I would like to be in charge of that, for instance...)

All this, coming off a weekend where I had put forth a mighty effort already.

So I am glad it's le weekend!  And there will be no moving of furniture this weekend, of that one can be sure.

The weather is cooperating, and there will be outdoor adventures.  Already, the Mother's Day plants are in the ground.  There will be fresh tomatoes again this year.

And yesterday, these opened up.  The first tall beardeds of the season.

Silverado
Ruth Raymond Blue

And a group of Wide Blue Eyes in full bloom...just because.

The week did have it's high-lights.

Wee Iris

I have these blooming now. All at once.

none of these are tall bearded. The above pictured is about 15" in height.

This one only about 6" high.

I think for the first time since moving here 7 springs ago.

Little Yellow is about 8" high.

Spring took a long time in getting here but it seems to all be working out ok.

This guy blooms about 15" tall.

But then.

These are about the same, 15" tall.

Close-up

Chilly nights are the forecast for the week once again.

Mother's Day purchases, including tomatoes, will wait for planting.

Prudence dictates!

An FO...

and other Spring-y stuff.

Today's subject is revisiting a past project.  That's is very hard to do for me today.

Nay.

Impossible.  Because....(drum roll)...

Peasy!! (by Heidi Kirrmaier) is finished!

(Buttons from DSis's stash.)

(Aarlen Cashmere/Wool a gift from Martha at Q is for Quilter.)

I loved knitting this.  The yarn was so very nice.  For once I was confident I had enough and wasn't going to run out!  It will look lovely over a cami or tank.  But still chilly here, so today, over a long-sleeved tee. Followed the pattern pretty much exactly, and thought it was well-written.

Peasy's initial voyage was to the monthly weaver's & spinner's guild meeting, where I bought a Jacob's fleece from a local....sheep raiser person. Sweet baby lambs, where does my mind go at times like that?  I need more stuff to spin, and additional things to do like...I don't know what.

Anyway, I also have these to show off.

Tar Heel Elf

And I think...Wide Blue Eyes.  Interestingly, this particular bloom?  4 standards and 4 falls.  Sort of a mutant ninja medium bearded iris...

In spite of the chilly nights, I have blooms.

April 22, 2010

Oh. My.

I first saw the bud just YESterday!

Today it is rainy and overcast, and as there was NO color showing, I just knew I wouldn't have an open bloom when I got home from work.

Well.  Surprise! Isn't it just the cutest most perfect little thing? Not more than 6 inches high!

End of April and I have my first tee tiny iris open!

DSis...what is the name?  And for some perspective on size...See here.

And for something completely different...Wonderful Guy, Only Step Son, and I are headed to Kansas.  I am not sure, but don't believe there are any internet cafes where we are going.  And as I have not been thoughtful enough to plan my posts ahead...well, there may not be any Needles of Iron updates for a few days.

But I am sure I will have some smashing good stories and fun photos of fun and frivolity in Small Town, Kansas on my return.

This Week's Iris

I am late in posting these bloomers. (Whenever I write 'bloomers', I think of the term my great-aunt used for her under-drawers! Haha. I said bloomers!)
Seems my life has taken on different pace of late. Fortunately I have learned, or begun to learn, that the best thing for me to do in such situations is adapt to what life hands me. Fighting life is an upstream swim. Going with the flow is a much healthier, more serene lifestyle for me.
Only took me about 50 years to figure that out. With age...sometimes comes wisdom.
So. Back to some eye candy...horticulture style.
This is one that for one reason or another I have had puny bloomage before. Not so this year. These are the blooms in the top photo on the left. And I don't remember the name.
And this one I know that name of...just not right now...
This might be Lion's Share...or it might not be....
I think this is something like Unicorn's Horn
This might be another Horace, but if it is, it means I was totally lax in my sorting and replanting.
Superstition

And my mother's day gift from Wonderful Guy last year, a lovely iris siberica (I am pretty sure, but lost the tag...)

I know. I am hopeless. And useless for decent information.

Sunday Show and Tell

Today I have iris blooming...I am excited...and I have photos.

Fair warning!

Another whose name escapes...and I know this one... [Edited to add: Dearest Sister reminds me this is Yes. Of course it is.]

Millennium Sunrise...

..of which I may have planted several rhizomes...I count at least four clumps of blooms, two of which are seen here. But that's okay. Orange if Wonderful Guy's favorite color. (Kate of High Altitude Gardening heard that 'orange is the color of insanity'. Hmmmm.....)

See how well the utility box is now concealed? Also, if one observes closely, one can see my peony buds! I have six or seven!

Hemstitched.

My stack of dishclothes needing seaming...

and the quilt, in process...

It's coming along, and looking swell, I think.

So now I am all caught up.

Except for yesterday's hike to Horsetooth Falls, and the marvelous wildflowers (photos!)...

And the remainder of the day spent in the yard finishing up odds and ends (more photos!)...

There is a busy week ahead, full of lots of stuff. I have knitters coming over on Tuesday for the first time in a several weeks. (Yea!) Also working some long days to make up time off on Friday for some medical follow-up stuff. (Aging=so not fun, and also...the downside of working without benefits and paid time off...) Work is busy busy busy, which is great great great, but also a little crazy crazy crazy with yet another short week. I am striving hard to prove myself worthy of both benefits and paid time off! Wonderful Guy and I are going on vacation in a couple of weeks, too. Heading to south Colorado for a week of playing the touristas. But get this...I told him I would like to leave after I had a chance to visit the Estes Park Wool Market that Saturday morning!

Of course, he agreed. He's Wonderful Guy!
