Found Objects

Back in the day, way back, I took my first (and only) quilting class at a local quilt shop on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Mo, called Quilt Country.  It is no longer in business, but I learned much in those six weeks back in 1977.

Kansas City and quilts are linked together historically in the patterns published in the Kansas City newspapers through the first half of the 20th century.  One of the newspaper artists responsible for the publishing of these weekly patterns was Ruby McKim.  These patterns were collected by many quilters.  I am sure many were used in quilting, but I am positive they were collected.  In the stacks of magazines Dearest Sister forwarded to me from her finds that I have been going through, I have stumbled across two groups of these collections.

One group is about 2 dozen of actual newspaper clippings of the mid-70’s reprints of the original 1930’s publications.

The other group is a partial collection of about 35-40 patterns, copied, as in mimeographed, collated, stapled, and then offered, if you send a SASE to a woman at such and such an address in Cherryvale, KS. So did she collect them, copy them, and sell them to those who didn’t receive the paper?  I am wondering about copyright issues!

I have read that Ruby McKim was a newspaper artist and not a quilter, at least at first, and often the designs published were not exact, perfectly sized, and template ready.  Sometimes, the space allowed for the weekly pattern was smaller than the weekly pattern, and adjustments had to be made. I also know that the women, mostly Kansas women, who were receiving the paper, were an adaptive group, and that didn't stop them.  Quilts were made from these patterns!

Back when I took my quilt class, I started my quilt book library with, among other books, Ruby McKim’s 101 Patchwork Patterns.  Unfortunately, it and several others were on the bottom shelf in the basement when the waters rose.  Fortunately, I found a copy at the Friends of the Library booksale a few years back.  More fortunately, I found another copy for Dearest Sister at another FOL booksale a few years later!  I replaced in the same way a copy of Marguerite Ickis The Standard Book of Quilt Making and Collecting which I had also lost at the same time.

Then something jogged my memory this past month of another book lost.  I bought it right after I finished the class.  It was relatively new, all color, and therefore, expensive.  I may have spent $8.00 on it, so it took some considerable rationalization at the time.  I could not remember the name, just what I have already mentioned, and that it was paperback, and the cover mostly blue.  I was successful one other time finding an out-of-print book at biblio.com so I went there and searched with tags quilting, patchwork, and a publication date from 1970-1980.  As the titles came up, I went to Amazon to check out the covers, as biblio.com didn’t have many of them photographed.

Well, I found it.  Primarily Patchwork, by Marjorie Pucket.  I just love it when I am have carried off a successful plan!

July 12th

And it’s the day I paid full price for a Kindle book…

Dance of Dragons is released today, and I must have it to read.

I have been sucked in by this series, to whit I cannot wait for the price to drop.  And alas, it will probably be another 4 years before the next book is published.

Oh, Mr. George R.R. Martin…how you tease your devoted readers!

I may just have to read them all again…

PS The SSABs are pretty much awesome, but I have really loud water in my house.

Dead

My Kindle kicked the bucket.  The screensaver won’t go away.  The customer service people asked me if my Kindle has been subjected to:

- Undue pressure... (I did read the four published books of ‘The Song of Fire and Ice’, each over 700 pages, in…what? Four weeks??)

- and/or heat... (102 in SW Kansas over the weekend…)

- or being dropped... (No. But if so, I wouldn’t admit it to the customer service people.)

I really don’t know what happened.  Perhaps carrying it around everywhere with me in only my felted cover isn’t the best practice.  Perhaps I need to invest in a ‘real’ cover.

However and whatever and anyway, the Kindle customer service people were as nice and kind and friendly and helpful as the counter person at a small town grocery store back in the day.  A new kindle is winging its way to me, free of charge, all bright and shiny and ready to read, by the end of the week.

Still…they are really and truly fortunate that…

1)      I had finished the currently published books of ‘The Song of Fire and Ice’.
2)      I am in between books on the Kindle.
3)      I have real life books to read.
4)      I was not in the middle of one of those crazy addictive Fire and Ice books.
5)      Because seriously?  I might have been murderous.
6)      Seriously.

ETA: The new one arrived last night!  I had forgotten what it takes to set it up, but all my books are transfered and I am good to go once again.

Hooked

Earlier this year, after I received my Kindle for Christmas, I started watching 3 or 4 sites that offered the heads-up on the ‘cheap read’ Kindle offers, books offered for free, or $1, or $3, or (gasp) even $5, generally.

Now many of these books are not my cuppa’ joe.  I have never been one for the bodice ripper romance novels (not judging, just saying…).  I do not read horror or the vampire genre.  And omylard…these seem to be a dime a dozen.

Or free, as the case is now.  These seem to be given away for e-readers.  Do not ask me why.

Also the Christian publishers…they like to give their books away, too.  Which is nice.  If one goes for that sort of read.

I did find some that were good reads…you know…in my book. Some mystery, which I can read a few at a time, especially historical ones.  That is, until I get creeped out by what the authors are thinking up for their characters to do.  (I mean really...if authors can think up this stuff...) I even found some young adult reads, that didn’t match up to Harry Potter, but were palate cleansing…and for free…well heck (she shrugs…) why not?  And some historical fiction, which I do enjoy.  Some political thriller types, contemporary fiction…et cetera et cetera et cetera....

In fact, it was very educational, to become…educated…in the indie publishing vs ‘name brand’ publisher pricing and what all that was about.

And in that line, I did buy a couple of books from the ‘big houses’ that were part of a series that I had started a long time ago, but hadn’t bought the hard copies of the last couple of books, because of price.  Also, I am not going to mention the series by name, because the series is just the respectable side of trashy, and I am a little embarrassed to be so taken by it.  But what’s cool about the Kindle?  I could read these ‘books’ without anyone knowing I was reading ‘almost trash’! These last two books were ‘on sale’ for $5.  So it was all cool.

There was one other book I bought for $5.  HBO was making a series based on it.  I hadn’t heard much more about it than that.  I read the description which said ‘resembles England during the War of the Roses’, but had fun stuff…like barbarians and direwolves and a great ice wall…so not for real.  Fantasy/historical fiction…highly rated.  Award winning.   Five bucks.  Sold.

I have finished six kindle books since I received the gift of my Kindle, and last week randomly chose Game Of Thrones as my next read.

Oh my. I kid you not.  I have been sneaking into the bathroom at work with it trying to eke out another page or two.  I have found it fascinating.

And unfortunately addictive.  There are going to be seven books in the series.  Four are written.  Number five will be released in July 2011.  Which is really really great…but…

also unfortunately, all full price, at $9.  The Kindle Store is like…a pusher!

Do not believe for a minute that the big publishers are going to sell a book by a big author for less just because paper is not involved.  And while some big authors wind up on the sale tables at Barnes and Noble relatively quickly, I saw a display of this particular series last weekend that led me to think I needed to buy Clash of Kings at least.

You know.  For my next fix.

edited to add...I started Book Three: A Storm of Swords last night...I am lost...

The Book Sale

It’s that time of the year! Time for the Friend’s of the Library Book Sale!!

Frankly, I was very concerned. I didn’t get there at lunch time. I waited until after work. I was really afraid all the good stuff might be gone!

And the Guy wanted to go, too. Not for the books.  Just to get out of the house, but he had some stuff to do first! I had to wait on him

Tick tock tick tock…I knew people were buying my books!

Finally. We got there. What a relief. The tables were still full. There was plenty to choose from.  And at dinner time on Friday? There were no crowds to fight. It was a very nice experience overall. And I made quite a haul.

Yes, indeed. I have reading material for another year. At least. (clicky for biggy and the titles/authors may be readable)

Now the Guy isn’t so much into the booksale. He looked around at other palces in the mall, checking in on me a couple of times. I gave him a call when I was ready to check out. Seems he had walked across the parking lot, across the street, to another shopping area. Could I bring the pickup over there and pick him up? Not a problem.

Except? I don’t usually carry the truck key with me. (To carry both key fobs gets bulky…) So I get halfway to the truck, toting all the above books, with my key ring in my hand and look down, and think…

Uh-oh.

I called back Wonderful Guy, himself who typically doesn’t carry the Subaru key, and told him he’s going to need to walk back across the street. And I would be waiting.

At least I had some books to leaf through while I waited.

New Books

2 photography (xmas gift from Eldest Daughter. Who takes care of her momma most excellently)

Understanding Exposure, by Peterson, and Macro Photography by Dietrick.  I have read the Exposure book, and it is very good!

3 knitting (xmas gift from my most excellent MIL)

The Knitter's Bible, by Claire Crompton, Fair Isle Sweaters Simplified, by the Bourgeois (which is such a fasicinating story of Philosopher's Wool), and Beautiful Knitting, by Luce Smits.

2 knitting purchased (with an xmas gift card, from the most excellent Wondenful Guy)

The Knitter's Book of Wool, by Ms. Crompton (after looking over her 'bible, and upon the recommendation of Erin), and Ann Budd's Handy Book of Sweater Pattern.  After all, I have a sweater quest this year.

1 gifted from Wisest Sister (whose job at JoAnn’s has the most excellent benefits in the world, apparently. For me.) (That didn't make into the photo, I am just now realizing!)

Victorian Lace Today, by Jane Sowerby.  With examples of Victorian Lace patterns.  Geez. oh. peez.

I might need to expand my knitting section to a second shelf!
I am feeling sated.
For now.
Gah. I love me some books.

Seriously and totally.

My Reward

I had a week of it at work.

Not that I would want this taken wrongly.  I am very very very grateful...still...for my new old job.  I still like, still get a kick out of going there each day, still like working with the old peeps, loving the mix of the challenge and yet knowing a bit about what I am doing. I love doing science!

But this week?  It was full, and it kicked my little old rear end.

I dragged my raggedy bottom home Friday...barely, to check on the tomatoes.  A mere 3 weeks after the first ripe one, we had frost.  Yep.  Frost.  And Friday?  After two days of blowy chilly weather, it was sunny and blue skies and shirt sleeves.  Well, if those sleeves were long.

Same with today.  Which, of course, is grand for the weekend.  Better this than the other way around.

So my tomatoes?  On Thursday?  Because I was wore through, I looked at the weather on the computer and saw that it was predicted to go down to...oh...35, maybe 34.  Why, I thought to myself, those weather predictors in Denver?  They are down in Denver!  And I am tired.  And it is hard...Hard! to cover up tomatoes.  So let's play the odds.

Well, the tomatoes? They are a bit worse for the odds.  Not completely done in, and perhaps there are some more ripening to be done on the vine over the next few weeks, but there are some...um...not so green leaves.  I have to say, times like these?  I get frustrated with my mostly wonderful Colorado clime.

Anyway.  Back to my reward for working soooooo hard, and yet...successfully for the most part...this past week, and living with only three (3!) weeks of ripening tomatoes this year.

It's Friends of the Library Book Sale time!  Oh yeah.  Time to stock up on reading material for the next year.  Let's see what struck her fancy last night?  What treasures did she scarf?

In review, I see Round One brought home two Ken Follet books!  I loved the Pillars Of The Earth and whatever the second one was called.  Hopefully these two will be good reads.  For $2, worth a shot. An Amy Tan, who I always find moving, sometimes to the soul.  The Isabel Allende is an Oprah Book Club book.  Sea of Trolls is an amusing title and suppose to be 'good'.  Next to the top?  Revenge of the Middle Age Woman.  Another title that caught my eye.  For $2, one can try some that one might not plunk down $12 or $14 for!  Same with Crazy For Trying.

Like I said, Round One.  On Sunday afternoon?  Prices drop, and late in the day, $5 a bag!

(Tag, Sister Dearest...you're it!)

FOL Sale!

Boy oh boy! Today...well...this weekend is one of my favorites of the whole year. It is the weekend of the Friends of the Library booksale. It opened at at 8 or 9, and I could barely contain myself until I took my lunch at 11.

I present my haul for your inspection!

This does not include the 12 step meditation books I picked up for passing along AT. SUCH. GOOD. PRICES!!

I went with two particular titles in mind this time, along with a general list of authors, and random ideas of picking up knitting, quilting, and gardening books. Really, at $2 and $3 per hardback, one can't go wrong. If I end up not liking a title, I donate it back to the library (and get a charitable deduction!).

But I digress. My search was for two of my favorite books of all time. And I found them.

Behold! The Princess Bride, which Dearest Sister turned me onto in high school, waaaaaaay before the movie. When they made the movie, we were both skeptical at first, but were pleased when we saw the end product.

And The Phantom Tollbooth. I was read this in grade school, and was entranced by Milo's story. I remember it to this day. I found a copy of each of these earlier in my life, but they have escaped me. Don't ask me how. I don't loan books. (Their mine, mine, I tell you, all MINE!)

Now I have copies again.

On a side note...on my way back to work...I was caught by the infamous noontime Fort Collins trains and their engine switching. For 35 freaking minutes!

At least I had reading material.
