We headed to Lory again today, in hope of climbing to Arthur's Rock. Last weekend, the parking was full for that trailhead so we opted for different trails. This weekend, there was a bit of a fire, apparently.
So we headed down the Shoreline Trail. I saw sand daisies, wallflowers, yellow violets, mertensia, and my first larkspur of the season.
There was this old nest in a tree that we spied on a break.
We don't know the kind of bird who might live in such a home.
I thought this patch of last year's mullein stems looked pretty cool.
The leave of mulleins are downy soft, and I read once they were used by natives for baby diapers...but perhaps that is legend. That they were used for diapers, that is. The leaves are indeed soft!
While we were standing on an overlook, a hawk floated up on the warm currents. He spent enough time soaring back and forth I got several photos. My shots weren't great, and more for the idea!
I liked this old tree up against the 'hogbacks'. I thought it might prove to be picturesque....
It was an easy trek, but very enjoyable. Best Dog Ever had a grand time. I call your attention to the new photo on the side panel of her. I figured summertime is not a time for scarf wearing, by people or animals!

It looks dry for this time of year; you must not be getting much moisture. It seems odd to look on CO landscape. Such a change from what my eyes look out onto now in NJ. So very different. But still beautiful in its own way.
I love larkspur. Plenty of mullein in my own yard here. My Mom called them "weeds" but I let them grow along the fringes.
Lucky you for having such a backyard! Your shots were great. By the way, I have an Alison in my life too...(a one L Alison!)
