I love Mad Men.
Well, not those of the male gender who are angry. I have had my fill of those. And perhaps fill enough for a few others as well, if the truth be known. And here at Chez Needles, or Casa del Iron, depending which way the wind is blowing, we...in the royal sense of we...are all about the truth.
So.
Mad Men. And famousness!
I speak of the TV show. Or in my case, the TiVo'd show, with somebody who plays Don Draper (yum!) and an actress named January Jones. I think if I still had children to name, I might copy that one. I think it has a certain snap to it.
Wiki describes the setting, the plot, and essence of the show as follows:
"Set in New York City, Mad Men begins in 1960 at the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue. The show centers on Don Draper (Jon Hamm), the agency's creative director, and those in his life, in and out of the office. It also depicts the changing social mores of 1960s America."
I like it. I like it alot. I am all about 'changing social mores'!
Wonderful Guy thinks there isn't much action to it.
But then...then there was this episode!
(And here comes the famousness!)
Don Draper's missus (played by the lovely January Jones), for one reason or another, mostly in a decadent way to bribe the daughter to love the new baby boy, buys said daughter a gift.
This is what was the daughter of Don Draper (yum!) sees when she opens her present.
I squealed. Yes I did. I squealed and said, 'That's EXACTLY like my Barbie.'
And it was. Is!
She hasn't changed a bit.
Except now she wears hand knits, and lives in Colorado, and wear shoes bought off Ebay.
See. Me and Don Draper's lil' girl. Two peas in a pod...
That is, until she booted her Barbie out her bedroom window in a fit of pique, or little brother jealousy, or some early onset of a 1960's neurosis that is sure to not show up until she is married with three kids and 43 and wondering what happened when life doesn't work like it was suppose to....
Spoiled little rich girl...
I had to save for my Barbie...
P.S. It's Just-A-Mere's turn tomorrow.

I have been going through my Mom's and Grandma's vintage knitting books from that era and earlier. The models in them look like they have 12" waists, just like Barbie! I will be posting about them soon. Amazing that you still have your Barbie and love the handknits.
I have the exact same Barbie, so does that mean I am famous too? Please tell me it's so!
I watched one episode and while I loved the whole premise of the show that one episode didn't grab me. Maybe I should try again.
Oh that's just like my Barbie, too. Except she's a blonde.
Susan- Dearest Sister had the blonde. Like most things we had...exactly alike, but different enough so we could tell them apart!
I am sensing the demographics of my readership here. Or at least of the commenters!
We have a doll who looks just like that -- she belonged to Gordon's sister who gave the doll (and lots of original clothes) to Emily when she was little. The funny thing is...all these years we thought she was "Midge" (because she came in a Midge case) but she's not because I just looked her up on Wikipedia and Midge always had longer hair. I think she's got one of the best hair styles -- love that bubble cut.
We only watch Mad Men on DVD so I haven't seen the 3rd season -- I try to avoid reading anything about it, but it's difficult since everyone's watching it and talking about it.
Hah! My sister had the platinum blonde Barbie too.
Then I had Midge, then Skipper, then I was too old for dolls ...
My Mom used to sew Barbie clothes for my daughter's Barbie - because she was offended at how skimpy the outfits were that we bought in the stores. We called Mom's creations (skirts below Barbie's knees and long sleeved shirts) Totally Sensible Barbie!
PS: I love Mad Men, too.
Martha- I hope I didn't spoil anything for you!
Lynne- Obviously, I am still not too old for my Barbie...and yes, you are as famous as me! It took me a few episodes to catch the drift of the show. I am fascinated by how well they capture the times.
Your barbie handknits are very nice! I think the last time I saw my Barbie, she was wearing a homemade plaid 'house dress'. Now, "Tressy", she always wore a crochet square dance dress! In varigated pink! With matching underpants!
I've never watched Mad Men- gonna have to Hulu it I guess.
That's pretty cool about your Barbie (and their's). I still have my Barbie, Ken, Skipper and Ricky. And Aunt Francie knitted and sewed their clothes and I actually have them too (even after Relena's girls played with them through the years)!
My mom had this Barbie, too. Her first was a #2 Barbie, but she also has yours (which I always liked better - her hair is SO GROOVY! I found a Barbie that is bald and has interchangable wigs (Miss Barbie, I believe) and I love her to pieces. I LOVE Barbie!
...and then the Barbie mysteriously showed up back in her bedroom that night. Even though she'd thrown it out the window. And that made her scream inconsolibly.
I ended up like Sally Draper. I love Mad Men, but Barbie creeps me out.
I had the redhead bubble cut and I loved her!
